There are dozens of home styles to choose from, each with a variety of beautiful features and characteristics that give the home a unique and functional aesthetic. If you’re planning on building a home from scratch, you’re probably struggling with choosing an architectural style to follow that reflects your personality and lifestyle. Here are the top home styles for 2021:

Cape Cod

The cape cod style dates back to 1675 and is typically one to one a half stories tall. This type of house features a steep roofline, hardwood floors, multi-pane windows and dormer windows, wood siding, and any additions are usually added to the side or back rather than building vertically.

Country French

Country French homes date back to the 18th century and are also usually one story. These homes feature steep roofs, narrow windows with paired shutters, stucco walls, and extravagant landscaping and driveways for curb appeal.

Colonial

Colonial-style homes date back to the late 1800s and are one of the most popular home styles in North America. These homes are usually 2 stories, sometimes 3, and feature large fireplaces and wood or brick facades. The interior layout is an important aspect of these homes with the functional kitchen and living room on the main floor with all bedrooms on the upper floor.

Victorian

Victorian-style homes date back to 1860-1900. These homes feature patterned shingles, steeply pitched roofs, bay windows, a wide front porch, and romantic patterns, colours, and textures. Contemporary Victorian homes follow the traditional style but include modern colours and fabrics.

Cottage

Cottage-style homes became popular in the early 1900s and are known for being charming and cozy homes. They feature steep roof pitches with cross gables, brick, stone, or stucco siding, arched doors, and casement windows.
